New school blocks, dormitories for QVS

THE construction of five new school blocks and two new dormitories at Queen Victoria School will take 24 weeks. While officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony held at QVS last week, Education, Heritage and Arts Minister Rosy Akbar said the first phase of rebuilding would cost $1.2m.

She said the groundbreaking ceremony was for an entirely revamped state-of-the-art facility for QVS. “I don’t need to go over and tell you what Tropical Cyclone Winston did to your lives, to your school and to the nation as a whole because you experienced the disaster firsthand,” she said. Ms Akbar said the classrooms at QVS and other schools would be built and designed to withstand Category 4 or 5 cyclones.

“This new state of constructions would deliver a home for students that is worthy of the talent that you have and the potential that you possess,” she said. Ms Akbar said Government wanted to ensure that every school in Fiji was considered a home for its students.

QVS principal Qalo Lesi acknowledged the ministry and Government for their assistance towards the school. “The school is still in its recovery stage because of the aftermath of TC Winston and we are so blessed to be assisted today (yesterday) with this new development that will surely enhance the academic achievement of the school,” he said.
