Fishing Vessel Runs Aground In Lau

A local fishing vessel, MV Solander XI, ran aground on a reef off Lomaloma, Vanuabalavu in the Northern Lau Group at 5pm yesterday.Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and said 11 passengers were rescued and are on the island. The incident was also confirmed by Pacific Building Solutions (PBS) Communications Officer Atelaite Cama.  She could not confirm how many people were on the vessel but said the crew were safe.

“They are in good spirits when a team from PBS visited the vessel as it ran aground 200 metres from the shoreline of the PBS campsite near Lomaloma,” she said.She said another fishing vessel had arrived in time to help the crew. A team from PBS is based on the island where it is engaged in reconstruction projects to do with rehabilitation work following damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The PBS team is expected to pull out by the end of February.
