Fiji Surfing Ride Towards 2020 Olympics

THE 2017 PBS Lighthouse Challenge Surf Contest in Suva this weekend will be a platform to develop young surfers for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, says competition co-ordinator, Blair Robertson.

The competition will be held at the west side of the Suva Harbour entrance, next to the twin lighthouses in the Capital City on Saturday.

Robertson expectes more than 40 surfers to compete.

“For the last few years, the real focus has been on the junior development and it has become bigger and bigger every year,” he said.

“Last year’s event was very successful as the waves were great and visually, it was great to watch.

“It seems like we will have similar conditions this year. The competition is expected to attract surfers from all over Fiji.

“We are getting more local surfers and it is more competitive than what it was 10 years ago,” Robertson said.

Competitors and spectators meet at the Royal Suva Yacht Club at 6.30am on Saturday.
